위력이 팽배하던 80여 년 전 이 땅은 도의의 시대를 잠시 맞이했었습니다. 그러나 역사가 반복된다는 격언을 증명이라도 하듯 세계는 다시 전쟁에 당면하고 냉전의 시대로 접어들고 있습니다. 가치가 무너져가는 이 시대에 “우리의 태극기는 어떤 메시지를 담아야 할 것인가?” 라는 물음에 1919년 3·1 운동 때 민족대표 33인이 낭독한 기미독립선언서에서 대답을 찾았습니다. “위력(威力)의 시대(時代)가 거(去)하고 도의(道義)의 시대(時代)가 래(來)하도다.” 이웃, 우리 사회, 그리고 우리 지구촌에 대한 사랑은 물론이거니와 도덕과 의리마저 상실해 가는 우리는, 우리의 태도를 점검할 필요가 있습니다. 광복 80주년을 맞아 제작한 이 태극기가 세상이 다시 ‘도’와 ‘의’를 찾는 데 기여하길 소망합니다.

Over 80 years ago, this land briefly entered an era of morality and justice. Yet, as if to prove the adage that history repeats itself, the world once again faces war and has stepped into a new Cold War era. In this age where values are crumbling, we sought an answer to the question, “What message should our Taegeukgi carry?” in the Proclamation of Korean Independence read by the 33 national representatives during the March 1st Movement of 1919: “The era of force has gone, and the era of morality and justice has come.” As we lose not only love for our neighbors, our society, and our global community, but also our sense of ethics and honor, it is time to reflect on our attitude. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Liberation, I hope that this Taegeukgi will contribute to a world that once again embraces morality and justice.
