1883년 조선은 태극기를 국기로 공표했으나, 당시 도안이나 제작 방식에 대한 구체적인 기준은 마련되지 않았습니다. 이후 일제강점기에는 국기 제정이 단절된 채, 민간과 독립운동 단체들이 각자의 조건 속에서 태극기를 제작해 사용했으며, 괘의 배열, 비율, 구성, 색채는 명확히 통일되지 않아 다양한 시각적 편차가 발생했습니다. 본 작업은 그 시기에 제작된 태극기 이미지들을 수집하고 병치함으로써, 제도화 이전의 상징이 반복·전파되는 과정에서 나타난 시각적 변이, 역사적 맥락 속에서 형성된 ‘오류’들을 하나의 장면으로 구성합니다. 통일 이전의 조형적 파편들이 모여 당대의 조건 아래 태극기의 원형이 어떻게 기억되고 재현되는지를 드러내며, 광복 80주년을 맞아 그 상징을 다시 사유할 수 있는 하나의 단면을 제시합니다.

In 1883, the Joseon Dynasty officially adopted the Taegeukgi as its national flag, but no concrete standards were established at the time regarding its design or production methods.

During the Japanese occupation, the official use of the national flag was interrupted, and independence activists and civilians created their own versions of the Taegeukgi under varying conditions. As a result, the arrangement of trigrams, proportions, composition, and colors differed significantly, leading to a wide range of visual variations.

This work gathers and juxtaposes Taegeukgi images produced during that era, presenting a single visual scene composed of symbolic “errors” and variations that emerged from the unstandardized reproduction of the flag. These fragmented forms shaped by historical context reveal how the Taegeukgi was remembered and reinterpreted under the conditions of its time.

On the 80th anniversary of Liberation, this piece offers a lens through which we can reexamine the evolving meaning of the Taegeukgi before it became institutionalized.
